I’m not a joke!

Hate and discrimination against people from the LGBT community is something that has always bothered me. People should be able to be themselves without getting hate for it. People should also be able to love who they want. I am not gay myself, but I do feel like I’m lucky to be born in the Netherlands, the first country in the world to legalize same sex marriage. I am happy to live in a country where (in general) people are open to the LGBT community.

Sadly, this is not so for everyone. Daniel Arzola is one of those people. He has always been bullied and hated on for being gay. People from his town even went as far as to tie him to up an electrical post and threw fireworks at his feet. Daniel managed to escape, but not everyone was as lucky as he is, because people have died from this violence. The local newspapers never write a word when something terrible like this happens and the ignorance still stands strong.

Thankfully, Daniel won’t be silenced this easily. As an artist from Venezuela, he sees the need to get the message across. The message of love and acceptence, instead of ignorance and hate. He has created a lot of amazingly designed posters with a strong message, that supports everyone in the LGBT community. Especially with the winter Olympics in Russia coming up, the timing of this project could not be better, because the subject is a heated one in several countries.

The project is called “I am not a joke” and shows that people in the LGBT want to be accepted and taken seriously. Daniel’s goal is to create 50 posters and maybe one day see them spread in bus stops, schools and other public places. He makes the posters in 3 different languages and is selling them online. Money from the sales will go towards spreading this campaign.

You can help too!
If you think that this subject deserves attention and that Daniel’s work is important, you can spread word about this project by sharing:
